Anna Paquin was born in Winnipeg and raised in Wellington. She began her acting career as Flora McGrath in her character in the romance film Piano. When she answered an open call for auditions and was selected for the part, she was cast in the role of Flora McGrath, the daughter of a mute Scottish piano player who moves from Scotland to New Zealand in mid-19th-century to be married. She was only nine, and she had no prior experience in acting. Following her move in the United States, she became an adolescent. Paquin played the lead role in Fly Away Home in 1996 and had a minor part in the film as Jane Eyre in the film when she was only a child. Paquin played Frankie Addams in a 1997 film adaptation for television of the novel by Carson McCullers The Member of the Wedding as well as a small role as the queen of Spain in Steven Spielberg's Amistad (1997). She played teenagers on Hurlyburly (1998), She's All That (2000), A Walk on the Moon (2000). In addition, she portrayed the teen groupie Polexia Aphrodisa in Almost Famous (2000).
