
Julie London (nee Peck; September 26th 1926 - October 18 1999) was an American actress and singer with a career that spanned over 40 years. London was a torch singer who was known for her smooth, soft vocals. She recorded over 30 albums of pop and jazz classics between 1955 and 1969. The first time she was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame was the recording of "Cry Me a River" which she premiered in her debut album. Alongside her music-related recognition, London was nominated for an Golden Globe Award in 1974 for her role as nurse Dixie McCall in the television series Emergency!. Born in Santa Rosa, California, to vaudevillian parents, London was discovered while working as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles, and she began her acting career. London's acting career lasted for 35 years and began in 1944 when she was cast in movies. They included roles as the lead female in numerous westerns. Also, she starred with Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951), John Cassavetes and Robert Taylor in Saddle the Wind (1958), Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958) as well as Robert Mitchum with The Wonderful Country (1959). In the mid-50s, she signed a recording contract with Liberty Records. This was the beginning of her professional career. The album she recorded her final studio album released in the year 1969. Her success continued as the female character in the role of Dixie McCall on the television series Emergency! (1972-1979) In the show, she played alongside her husband Bobby Troup. Jack Webb, her ex-husband also produced the show.
